What is a Canadian Bet?

Popular across both individual and team sports, Canadian bets are often applied in sports such as tennis, football, and horse racing. If you are new to Canadian bets or simply want to find out more, read on as we will explain more about how Canadian bets are constructed, how you can win, how the returns are generated as well as the different advantages and disadvantages that placing a Canadian bet can hold.

A Canadian Bet Explained

A Canadian bet contains 26 different bets: 10 doubles, 10 treble bets, five four-fold bets, and one five-fold accumulator. In order to complete your Canadian betting slip, you will need to select five horses, players, or teams. For the purpose of this example, let’s apply it to Premier League football.

Wanting to place a bet on five of the best teams in the league, our Canadian would look at including Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea and would be constructed in the following ways:

Doubles

  • Manchester City and Manchester United
  • Manchester City and Liverpool
  • Manchester City and Arsenal
  • Manchester City and Chelsea
  • Manchester United and Liverpool
  • Manchester United and Arsenal
  • Manchester United and Chelsea
  • Liverpool and Arsenal
  • Liverpool and Chelsea
  • Arsenal and Chelsea

Trebles

  • Manchester City, Manchester United, and Liverpool
  • Manchester City, Manchester United, and Arsenal
  • Manchester City, Manchester United, and Chelsea
  • Manchester City, Liverpool, and Chelsea
  • Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal
  • Manchester City, Arsenal, and Chelsea
  • Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal
  • Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea
  • Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea
  • Liverpool, Chelsea, and Arsenal

Four Folds

  • Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal
  • Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Chelsea
  • Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal, and Chelsea
  • Manchester City, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea
  • Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea

Five Folds

  • Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, and Chelsea

How Do You Win a Canadian Bet?

As a Canadian bet doesn’t contain any single elements, in order to win a Canadian bet you need at least a minimum of two of your five selections to be guessed correctly. The more selections you guess correctly, the higher your returns will be. If you want to win the maximum amount on offer, the only way you can win a Canadian bet is by correctly predicting the outcome of all five teams that have been entered into your Canadian bet slip.

To show you how your fortunes can change depending on how many outcomes you correctly predict, let’s run through a few different scenarios.

Scenario 1

Let’s assume that only Manchester City and Liverpool were the only winners from our five selections.

The only bet from all possible 26 selections would be the following:

  • Manchester City and Liverpool

As only two teams have been correctly predicted, this would mean that any treble bets, four folds, and five folds would be classed as losers.

Scenario 2

Let’s assume that Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal all won their games. This would result in the following bets being won:

Doubles

  • Manchester City and Liverpool
  • Manchester City and Arsenal
  • Liverpool and Arsenal

Trebles

  • Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal

Scenario 3

Let’s say that Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal have all won. This would result in the following bets being won:

Doubles

  • Manchester City and Manchester United
  • Manchester City and Liverpool
  • Manchester City and Arsenal
  • Manchester United and Liverpool
  • Manchester United and Arsenal
  • Liverpool and Arsenal

Trebles

  • Manchester City, Manchester United, and Liverpool
  • Manchester City, Manchester United, and Arsenal
  • Manchester City, Liverpool, and Arsenal
  • Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal

Four Folds

  • Manchester City, Manchester United, Liverpool, and Arsenal

As you will be able to see from the scenarios above, the more teams you correctly predict, the more bets you will win and the bigger returns you will earn. Remember, the only way you can win every line in your bet is by correctly predicting all five selections.

What Do I Need to Stake for My Canadian Bet?

Due to the fact that a Canadian bet consists of 26 different betting lines, whatever you wish to stake for one betting line will need to be multiplied by 26. Therefore, if you want to bet £1 per line, the total for your bet will be £26. If you wanted to bet £10 per line, the total would be £260.

Just remember that whatever you choose to stake will need to cover all 26 lines of the bet.

How are the Odds for a Canadian Bet Calculated?

The odds and returns of a Canadian bet are completely dependent on the prices of the teams, horses, and players that you choose. The higher the odds of your selections, the higher the likelihood that you will have a bet that returns a decent price.

Each of the ten doubles is individually calculated by multiplying the odds of the two different teams together, and a similar premise will follow for the treble bets, fourfolds, and fivefold.

As there can be multiple outcomes within a Canadian bet, the overall returns will be worked out by adding all of the different returns together from the various combinations.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Canadian Bets

Advantages

  • A Canadian bet can see some huge returns made, particularly if all five selections are successful.
  • There is great flexibility to the bet with not every selection needing to win in order for returns to be made.
  • The bet can be applied across multiple sports.
  • A variety of odds can be chosen to form your overall bet.

Disadvantages

  • A minimum of two selections are needed in order for your bet to be classed as a winning one.
  • The stakes can be high in comparison to single bets or accumulators.
  • Can be complex to track and work out the overall returns if a few of your selections lose.
