Looking for more calculation options for your bets? Read our comprehensive bet calculator guide.

Containing four different selections, a Lucky 15 does exactly what it says on the tin and rolls out those four selections into 15 different bets.

Usually only made by those that have a super keen interest in the sport, you might be unfamiliar with how a Lucky 15 is constructed, but don’t worry that’s where we come in.

In this guide we will reveal everything you need to know about a Lucky 15. We will highlight the different bet types that help construct it, what you need to do in order to win, how much needs to be wagered for the bet to be placed, how the odds are calculated, we will look back at some famous winners and assess all of the different advantages and disadvantages.

How is a Lucky 15 Constructed?

As explained at the top of this article, a Lucky 15 involves four selections being allocated into fifteen different bets. These bets are:

Betting on four separate horses we can break it down as follows:

Singles

  • A single on horse 1
  • A single on horse 2
  • A single on horse 3
  • A single on horse 4

Doubles

  • Horse 1 and 2 to win
  • Horse 1 and 3 to win
  • Horse 1 and 4 to win
  • Horse 2 and 3 to win
  • Horse 2 and 4 to win
  • Horse 3 and 4 to win

Trebles

  • Horses 1, 2 and 3 to win
  • Horses 1, 2 and 4 to win
  • Horses 1, 3 and 4 to win
  • Horses 2, 3 and 4 to win

Fourfolds

  • Horses 1, 2, 3 and 4 all to win

Unlike in some of the other multiples that you can place such as Goliath or Heinz, one of the major advantages of placing a Lucky 15 is that only one of your four selections needs to win in order for you to see some form of return.

A Lucky 15 Winning Example

For the purpose of this guide, we will assume that three of our chosen horses, horse 1, horse 2 and horse 3 all win their respective races, whilst horse 4 loses. In this example we would win the following bet:

Singles

  • Horse 1 single
  • Horse 2 single
  • Horse 3 single

Doubles

  • Horse 1 and 2
  • Horse 1 and 3
  • Horse 2 and 3

Trebles

  • Horses 1, 2 and 3

As horse 4 was beaten, any bets involving him would be losers and would also class the one fourfold bet as a losing one.

The goal of placing any bet is to make a profit and in this example with three winning horses there is a great chance that the amount returned would cover our original stake. You can also bet using each way.

However, even in a winning Lucky 15 there is a chance that the bet could fail to return to a profit.

If only one selection were to win, for this example let’s say it is Horse 2, only the single bet containing Horse 2 would be a winning bet and any other doubles, trebles and the four fold would be losers as the other horses all would have lost.

In this case it is highly likely that although a return would be made, the original betting stake wouldn’t be covered.

What is Needed for a Stake in a Lucky 15 Bet?

Similarly to other popular multiples, when wanting to place a Lucky 15 bet, all 15 lines within the bet need to carry the same stake. This means that if you want to bet £1 per line, you will need to multiply your stake by fifteen to reach your final total. In this case the total would be £15.

If you wanted to bet £10 per line, the total of your bet would be £150.

Whilst a Lucky 15 bet isn’t the most expensive bet to place, you need to be mindful that the larger your stakes, the more you will need to stake. If you like betting small stakes, you need to ensure that if you want to place a Lucky 15 bet you have the required funds to do so.

Normally Lucky 15 bets are closely associated to horse racing due to the better odds that horse racing usually offers in comparison to other sports such as football and tennis. With the bigger odds, there is a much better chance of scoring a big win.

However, if you like the flexibility that Lucky 15’s provide, there is no reason why you can’t place this bet across other sports such as tennis and football. Some Lucky 15 bets even see selections made from across multiple sports. Overall there is plenty of flexibility on offer when looking to place a Lucky 15 bet.

Have There Been Any Famous Lucky 15 Bets Landed?

Due to the fact that only four selections are needed to land a Lucky 15 bet, it isn’t surprising that over time there have been numerous winners of some lucrative Lucky 15’s that have been won.

One of the best examples came back in 2023 when one lucky bettor scored £77,000 off just a £3 Lucky 15.

With the odds of his selections containing a 150/1, 125/1, 18/1 and 5/1 shot, it shows that if the odds of the selections are large, huge amounts can be won from some reasonably small stakes. In this case this really was the bet of a lifetime.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Placing a Lucky 15 Bet

Just like with every bet type, there are advantages and disadvantages to placing a Lucky 15 bet.

  • Big returns can be won
  • Can be used across multiple sports - but is particularly great for horse racing
  • The bet is hugely flexible
  • Only one selection is needed to win in order for some profits to be made

Disadvantages
