What is a Yankee Bet?

A Yankee contains eleven betting lines and requires any wagering stake to be multiplied by eleven so it certainly isn’t the cheapest bet that can be placed.

To some, the structure of a Yankee bet can be intimidating, however once fully understood, they can be truly brilliant bets to place and some big returns can be made.

A Yankee Bet Explained

A Yankee bet contains eleven separate lines and consists of:

In order to be triggered, four teams or horses must be selected. Commonly used in a variety of team sports such as football, the NFL, or NBA, Yankees can also be placed on horse racing or tennis.

For example, let’s assume that we want to place a Yankee bet on four Premier League teams to win their respective fixtures: Manchester City, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Tottenham.

Double Bets

  • Manchester City and Liverpool
  • Manchester City and Newcastle
  • Manchester City and Tottenham
  • Liverpool and Newcastle
  • Liverpool and Tottenham
  • Tottenham and Newcastle

Treble Bets

  • Manchester City, Liverpool, Newcastle
  • Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham
  • Manchester City, Newcastle, Tottenham
  • Liverpool, Newcastle, Tottenham

Fourfold

  • Liverpool, Manchester City, Newcastle, and Tottenham

Tracking each of the individual elements within a Yankee can be wise to see how your bet is progressing.

Can a Single Team, Horse, or Player Win Me My Yankee Bet?

Although there are more lines, a Yankee bet closely resembles a Trixie bet where a minimum of two selections need to be predicted correctly. If just one of your teams, horse, or player is successful, it is impossible for your bet to win as there are no single elements to the bet.

How Do I Win My Yankee Bet?

Using our example from earlier, let’s run through a few winning scenarios.

Example 1: Two Wins, Two Losses

If both Manchester City and Liverpool win but Newcastle and Tottenham lose, we land the double bet where both teams are represented, but the other doubles involving Newcastle and Tottenham would be classed as losers. Any trebles and the fourfold would also be classified as losing bets. The returns likely won’t cover the initial betting stake.

Example 2: Three Wins, One Loss

If Manchester City, Liverpool, and Newcastle win but Tottenham loses, we land the following bets:

  • Double between Manchester City and Liverpool
  • Double between Manchester City and Newcastle
  • Double between Liverpool and Newcastle
  • Treble between Manchester City, Liverpool, and Newcastle

Any combination involving Tottenham would be a losing bet, including the one fourfold bet.

Winning All Betting Lines

The only way to win every betting line is with all four selections winning. This would land every double, treble, and fourfold combination, leading to massive returns.

How Are the Odds for a Yankee Calculated?

The odds and returns of a Yankee bet depend on the prices of the teams, horses, and players chosen. Each of the six doubles is individually calculated by multiplying the odds of the two different teams together. A similar premise follows for all treble bets and the fourfold bet. The overall returns are the sum of these different calculations.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Yankee Bets

  • Potential for huge returns, particularly if all four selections are successful
  • Flexibility, with some returns possible even if not every team wins
  • Applicable across multiple sports
  • Variety of odds can be chosen to form the overall Yankee bet

Disadvantages

  • A minimum of two selections are needed for the bet to be classed as a winning one
  • Stakes can be high compared to single bets or accumulators
  • Can be complex to track and calculate overall returns if one team loses
